Use digital printing to your advantage. You no longer need to order 144 screen printed T-shirts, but can get smaller lots since there's no setup fee, just the artwork.

We get small lots of a bunch of sizes, including kids, since cute babies wandering around wearing the Songfacts fish logo is about the cutest thing ever.

Absolutely. And working with local designers helps build a community around your work. It is a win/win.

The best part about the Internet is access to SO many sites where a band can get cheap merch: stickers, flyers, posters, tees and more. There are endless amounts of these sites, and most of them put out high quality products.

As far as design goes, though, I can't recommend enough that bands find a local artist/designer and work with them. In any town or city there are talented graphic artists and illustrators, screen printers and print designers that would love to work with local bands. As a designer myself, I truly feel that working with artists and musicians is the best. Forming a good relationship with a local designer could be a long-term benefit for any band.

We did surprisingly well with our baby-size minty fresh shirts too. Definitely want to think about whether your graphics and vibe can appeal to kids (or perhaps more importantly, the parents buying the merch for their kids.)

I also would recommend overnightprints.com for posters, postcards and especially business cards. They always have coupon codes and you can usually get $20 off poster printing (20 11x17 for shipping charge only) or 250 business cards for free (only shipping).

The quality is nice and the turnaround is extremely fast. Just Google "overnight prints coupon code" and you're sure to find a list of current promotions. We even had promo download cards printed like business cards and have our bands hand them out at shows.
